Sprezzatura (Italian pronunciation: [sprettsaˈtura]) is an Italian word originating from Baldassare Castiglione's The Book of the Courtier, where it is defined by the author as "a certain nonchalance, so as to conceal all art and make whatever one does or says appear to be without effort and almost without any thought about it". It is the ability of the courtier to display "an easy facility in accomplishing difficult actions which hides the conscious effort that went into them". Sprezzatura has also been described "as a form of defensive irony: the ability to disguise what one really desires, feels, thinks, and means or intends behind a mask of apparent reticence and nonchalance".
The word has entered the English language; the Oxford English Dictionary defines it as "studied carelessness".

A photo for every day in 2011
Time Lighbox has given us (I think) the best of the 'Year in Photos' collections around. It is encyclopedic in scope, and includes plenty of incredible photography and jogs your memory of those events you may've possibly forgotten from all that time ago...

Photomontager: Toshiko Okanoue
Was looking at utopian and dystopian fantasies using collage on the Phaidon website.
This girl's were particularly interesting, more dystopian-y.. Born in 1928, grew up in Tokyo, she went to fashion school where she was introduced to a traditional Japanese collage style, and then to Max Ernst's collages. Then, in 1953, she held her own exhibition, which included 50 or so collages (below are a few off Google).
After marrying in 1957 her collage production ceased, and it was only until 2000, aged 72 that she held 'Okanoue Toshiko Photo Collage: Droplets of Dreams' at the Dai-Ichi Mutual Insurance South Gallery in Tokyo.

French architect - Fernand Pouillon
An architect around the 1970s who designed some futuristic luxury residences and hotels in Algeria, like:
The Seraidi Hotel, Annaba, Algeria.

I found this b+w image first in my research for something else. Photo by Guy Le Querrec, 1970. From Magnum Photos.
Other designs:

Portfolio Station Sanitaire in Marseilles.

It's February and...
1. I'm reading...

and have reignited my typeface fanaticism.

[From Designspiration]
2. I've learnt that API in computing terms stands for 'Application Programming Interface', i.e. it's like a set of operating system functions of one programme enabling it for use by another. Was looking on www.conditionone.com about a new 'immersive video' technique patented by these guys and only available on iPads at the moment.
3. There's a big David Shrigley show at the Hayward. And I need to update my website.

Have a look at the review I wrote:
"Currently showing at the Zabludowicz Collection is ‘Future Map’ – a survey of the best talent to graduate from the University of the Arts London’s six colleges – and ‘Zabludowicz Collection Invites… Benedict Drew’ – a new initiative where the collection selects a young, currently un-represented UK-based artist, and gives them a platform to exhibit, and produce new work." ...

Filmed/created by Harley Weir for Test Mag.
A good example of the new move to fashion 'stories' through the medium of film, particularly considering the influx of online magazines now.
